Quick answer

Separate the towel, gently lift excess product and pre-treat with a laundry product suitable for the stain and fabric. Follow the label and your approved wash programme. Inspect before tumble drying. Orange sunscreen marks may need specialist advice.

01 / Know the mark

Three stains. Different decisions.

Why it matters: repeat washes use staff time, chemicals and machine capacity. Identifying the likely stain gives you a better starting point.

Makeup

Coloured smears

Foundation, lipstick and mascara can combine oils, waxes and pigment.

Start here: gently lift the excess. Choose a laundry spotter labelled for the soil and towel fabric.

Sunscreen

Oily patches

Some sunscreen marks are mainly oily residue.

Start here: use a compatible detergent or spotter whose instructions allow pre-treatment.

Check first

Orange marks

Some sunscreen ingredients can react with iron in water. Other causes are possible too.

Start here: ask your supplier to assess the stain and recommend a compatible treatment.

A white towel does not automatically make bleach the right choice. Check the care label and the treatment’s stain-removal instructions.

What Alex would ask

Before you change products…

  • Was the mark there before or after washing?
  • What does the towel care label allow?
  • Which products, doses and contact times are being used?
  • Who checks stained towels before the dryer?

Using an external laundry? Share a stain photo and agree how affected towels will be flagged.

02 / Make it repeatable

A 6-step towel-care routine

Keep the instructions where your housekeeping team uses them.

  1. Separate

Flag stained towels at collection. Note the likely stain and gently remove excess product without spreading it.

  2. Check

Read the towel care label, product instructions and safety data sheet. Trial unfamiliar treatments on a test towel or inconspicuous area.

  3. Pre-treat

Use the stated amount and contact time. Avoid harsh scrubbing or extended soaking unless instructed. Get specific advice for orange marks.

  4. Wash

Follow your approved programme. Match the dose to the load and water conditions, and avoid overloading the machine.

  5. Inspect

Check before tumble drying. Heat can make remaining stains harder to remove. If a mark remains, reassess before another cycle.

  6. Return to service

Dry according to the care instructions. Return only towels that meet your property’s appearance, condition and hygiene standards.

Keep your established hygiene requirements in place. Visible stain removal alone does not demonstrate hygienic laundering. Do not mix treatment chemicals unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it.

03 / Check the result

Count usable towels.

Track towels processed, rewashes, rejects and treatment time over a short trial.

20 / 200

Twenty rewashes from 200 towels = 10% rewash rate.

Illustration only, not an industry benchmark.

Compare chemical, water, energy, labour and replacement costs. Allow for changes in occupancy and stain mix.

The Practicalist Take

A repeat wash has a cost.

Look beyond the bottle price to the cost of getting a towel ready for the next guest.

Practical Sustainability™: trial one change and measure the result before claiming savings or less waste.

04 / Prevent the repeat

Small changes to try next

Help guests

Trial clearly labelled makeup-removal cloths with a friendly note. Dark cloths still need proper laundering.

Help the team

Display the product, contact time and escalation contact. Set a clear limit on repeating an unsuccessful treatment.

Check the pattern

Recurring orange marks? Ask your supplier about the stain and water conditions before changing several products.

Where Insinc can help

Choose a treatment that fits.

Have a stain photo, towel care label, current product names and wash programme ready. Ask about stain claims, fabric compatibility, dose and contact time.

The questions we hear

Hotel towel stain FAQs

Can makeup stains come out of white towels?

Many can improve or come out with suitable treatment. Results depend on the makeup, towel and previous treatment. Trial the process rather than assuming complete removal.

Why does sunscreen sometimes turn orange?

One possible cause is a reaction between avobenzone in some sunscreens and iron in water. Recurring marks need assessment because other causes are possible.

Should I bleach sunscreen stains?

Do not assume bleach or a whitening product is suitable. Check the towel care label and treatment directions. Persistent orange marks may need a compatible specialist treatment.

How long should I leave a stain remover on?

Follow the contact time for that specific product. Longer is not automatically better. Do not extend treatment into an overnight soak unless the manufacturer allows it.

Should I use a hot or cold wash?

Use the approved programme for your towels, chemicals and hygiene requirements. An initial stain-treatment temperature is not automatically suitable for the full commercial wash.

When should a towel leave guest service?

When it no longer meets your presentation, condition or hygiene standards. After a suitable recovery attempt, compare further treatment with replacement instead of repeating the same unsuccessful wash.
