Buyer’s Guide to Choosing Greaseproof Paper Bags

Greaseproof paper bags are designed for foods where oils, grease and moisture could quickly soak through standard paper packaging. They are a practical choice for bakeries, cafés, takeaway shops, food trucks and other hospitality businesses serving items such as pastries, pies, hot food and snacks.

Insinc’s current range includes flat greaseproof bags from UniPak and Fortune, along with two-ply brown greaseproof satchel bags from Detpak.

Flat Bag or Greaseproof Satchel?

Flat greaseproof bags suit relatively flat or compact food items and are available in sizes from approximately 140 x 170mm through to 210 x 240mm. UniPak and Fortune options are supplied in bulk cartons of 1,000 bags.

For thicker or bulkier food, Detpak two-ply satchel bags provide additional depth. Available options include No.2, No.3 and No.4 sizes, with gussets ranging from 45mm to 75mm.

Which Size Should You Choose?

Choose the bag according to the dimensions, shape and portion size of the food being packed. Smaller No.1 and No.2 bags suit compact snacks and bakery items, while larger sizes provide more room for pies, sandwiches and takeaway portions.

Greaseproof packaging helps resist grease penetration, but suitability for very hot, wet or long-hold foods should be checked against the individual product specifications.

Many Castaway greaseproof products are no longer available in New Zealand, and the Emperor No.6 satchel is obsolete, so current UniPak, Fortune and Detpak products provide the main available alternatives.
